Obi-Wan Kenobi

With Tidewater Comicon 2022 just 2 weeks before the premiere of Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+, it was easy to choose Kenobi as 1 of the 2 new statues I made for the convention.
Like with most statues, I started with the head. I used a picture of Obi-Wan from the Clone Wars TV show to model the beard.
The hair was made in a few sections on top. I didn’t want the hair to be completely smooth on top so each section is off set from the adjacent sections to give some slight waviness to the hair. At the time I did the hair I was unsure if the hood of the cloak would fit over the head or be pulled down when setup.
The next part of the statue was the lightsaber. I modeled this after the standard lightsaber hilt used with most LEGO models. I sketched out the lightsaber to real size and then used PVC pipes wrapped in foam to get the diameters just right.
Little details like the fins on the side were added to the foam coated core.
I did use one 3D printed part to connect the hilt to the clear lightsaber tube. The clear tube is used for plumbing to see water flow and was bought from Home Depot. The 3D part had to be made to get a snug seal between the hilt and the blade.
To get the blue glow in the blade, I ran 4 strands of LED lights down a smaller PVC pipe in the center and then put a lightly blue spray painted piece of plastizote around the inside of the tube. The plastizote diffuses the light to try to get an even glow. The 8 AA batteries are stored in the hilt to power the LED strips.

About 2 days after I finished the lightsaber, Odin Makes released a YouTube video about making a LEGO lightsaber. Many of the techniques he used were similar to what I did so you may want to check it out for more details about making one. You can find his video here.
My daughter made the robes for Obi-Wan. I extended the front of the hips down simulate the bottom of Kenobi’s tunic. The remainder of the statue was made using the standard techniques I’ve used for all of the previous statues.
The Obi-Wan Kenobi statue was placed in front of the entrance to the convention hall. During the show, there was a constant stream of people taking pictures. Many of the Star Wars cosplayers would simulate lightsaber battles with the statue.
