Spider-Man

Once it was decided to make Venom for Hampton Comicon 2018, it was an easy choice to pick Spider-Man as my second project for the convention. Like Venom, Spider-Man used a very basic body but I added lot of webbing detail. I could have hand-painted this on but it seemed cleaner to use thin strips of foam to create a raised web. Hand-painting would have required a very steady hand and could easy drift and shift. On the Loki statue I made last year, I painted the pattern on the torso and you can see the lines are not as neat and consistent. Using the thin strips allowed me to lay out the webbing BEFORE painting. It also gave a nice raised effect to the webbing.
Unfortunately these thin strips made the process of coating the foam in mod podge very difficult. My wife had to spend several nights carefully cleaning up the excess mod podge that would gather in the corners of the webbing.
The final paint job was one of the cleanest of the statues I’ve done to date.
