Doc Ock

In the fall of 2021, Marvel fans were all waiting for the new Spider-Man: No Way Home movie. When the trailers were released and we saw Alfred Molina as Doc Ock again, I knew I wanted to do a Doc Ock statue with tentacles.
The biggest challenge for this project was the tentacles. I had to alter the PVC frame I normally use to support the addition for 4 PVC pipes. Two of the pipes were bent to the ground and didn’t need much support but two of the pipes flow from the back of the statue over the top with only 1 point of support. For this frame, I used 1″ diameter PVC instead of the normal 3/4″ diameter. This made it heavier but also gave it a little more strength. at the end of each PVC pipe was a claw. The two on the ground are open while the two in mid air are half closed in an attack position. The claws were attached with a threaded connector and could be removed for transport.
Once I had the poles in position, I had to create all of the robotic segments. Each pole had 24 or 25 segments depending on the length and bend of the pole. Each segment consisted of a 2 rounded sides and a 2 mm foam edge that. Nearly 200 of these rounded triangles with a hold in the center had to be cut and shaped with a rotary tool. Once glued together, I cut the segment at the seam so I could wrap and glue it around the PVC pipe. In between each segment was a foam ring to give it a little more detail.
My daughter made the trench coat. I 3D printed the frame for the sunglasses and used clear plastic covered with car window tint to make the lenses for the glasses.
