Doomhammer

In my free time during the summer of 2018 (when the temperature was too hot in my garage), I started reading the World of Warcraft novels. Many of the early novels deal with Orgrim Doomhammer and the beginning of the Horde. After reading the name Doomhammer countless times, I started to think about how cool it would be to make a replica of his famous weapon…
the Doomhammer.

I decided to model this prop after the version used by Enhancement Shamans in Legion. It includes the Frost Wolf Clan logo added when Thrall took possession of Doomhammer.

The head of Doomhammer started with some simple shapes. There’s a hole through two panels where a PVC pipe will slide through to attach the hammer’s head to the handle.
This prop was the first time I was able to use the foam dowels available from tntcosplay.com. I cut discs out of the rod and rounded the edges to make the rivets.
I cut out wolf shaped 6mm foam pieces and used a rotary tool to round the edges and add the details.
For the top of the hammer, I glued together 4 foam discs. The bottom three had holes to cover the PVC pipe cap that prevents the PVC pipe from sliding through the hammer head. I then used a rotary tool to shape the disc stack into a sphere.
A strip of spiked details were wrapped around the base of the sphere.
I used a similar method of gluing foam discs together to form the bottom of the hammer head. This part hides the PVC connector that attaches the head to the handle.
The handle started out with a simple PVC pipe. Layers of foam are added to give it details. The bottom tapers to a thick pommel at the bottom. I used foam wedges to increase the diameter the closer to the bottom of the hammer. This is then covered in a think layer of 2mm foam.
More details were added including a 2mm strip of foam wrapped around the shaft to look like a leather grip.
The whole hammer was painted and some weathering was added. In the future I may swap out the foam ring around the top of the grip with fake fur to look more accurate.
